Free GivingTuesday mobile giving campaigns

As a Founding Partner of GivingTuesday, The Mobile Giving Foundation Canada (MGFC) is launching a GivingTuesday mobile giving campaign that any Canadian charity can participate at no cost.

MGFC was thrilled to hear about the GivingTuesday movement coming to Canada, and so, when presented with the opportunity to become a founding partner, MGFC enthusiastically jumped onboard.

MGFC is a strong advocate for donor trust, donor choice, donor integrity, and operational transparency. MGFC is passionate about giving, in all forms, and not just about giving through text message. So, as a part of MGFC’s participation in GivingTuesday as a founding partner, MGFC has set out to encourage all Canadians to give back in whatever capacity they can. MGFC sees this as an ideal opportunity to showcase the many charitable causes in Canada that all need our support in some way.

MGFC is offering the use of a single keyword/short code, for free, to charities that have an existing charitable program agreement with MGFC, and those specifically that partner with GivingTuesday. Those confirmed prior to November 1, 2013 (deadline extended to November 8, 2013) as committed to promoting the GivingTuesday movement will be provided with the option of utilizing a completely free text-to-donate campaign to assist in raising funds around their GivingTuesday promotions.

Not yet certified by MGFC, but a GivingTuesday partner? Not a problem. Charities without an existing charitable program agreement with MGFC can request an application package from [email protected], complete the application requirements, and sign off on the charitable program agreement before November 1, 2013 to be eligible for the use of a free keyword/short code in connection with the organization’s GivingTuesday promotion. The MGFC give back for GivingTuesday text-to-donate campaigns will include a social media element to provide charities with the opportunity for donor engagement. Each campaign will be active, without any associated campaign fees, between November 5 and December 31, 2013, so charities will have the good portion of two months to engage with new donors and raise incremental funds through text message.

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday just around the corner, more and more Canadians are gearing up to spend. What if there was a day each year dedicated to giving back in the midst of the holiday spending season? Now there is! The first annual GivingTuesday is coming to Canada on Tuesday, December 3, the Tuesday following Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

GivingTuesday, initiated by CanadaHelps, GIV3, and several other partners, marks the opening day of the giving season. The movement encourages individuals and organizations to join together and find innovative ways to give back to the charities and causes they support throughout the holiday season. Momentum is rapidly building, with 15 organizations having enthusiastically pledged their support by becoming Giving Tuesday Founding Partners and inviting all Canadians to participate. Charities, business, media and even individuals are encouraged to participate to make Canada’s first annual GivingTuesday a resounding success. The GivingTuesday movement was first launched last year in the US by the UN Foundation, the 92nd Street Y and a number of founding partners including The Salvation Army, the American Red Cross and Microsoft. Over 2,500 US partners came together across the United States for the inaugural GivingTuesday.

In the US last year, the collective efforts of partners, donors and advocates saw significant increases in online charitable giving and key participant Paypal saw on increase of 487 per cent in online donations on the first GivingTuesday as compared to the same day the previous year.

“We are proud to be a founding partner of Canada’s first annual GivingTuesday,” said Marina Glogovac, president and CEO, CanadaHelps. “GivingTuesday is an invitation not only to the charitable sector, but to all Canadians. We encourage everyone to participate by finding ways to give back to causes that are important to them, whether it is making donations to a charity of their choice or by volunteering in their communities.”

Given the overwhelming success in the US last year, GivingTuesday founding partners hope to make history in Canada in 2013. “We want to inspire Canadians this year to match the US success,” said AFP Canada Council head Derek Fraser. “And we are welcoming Canadian charities, individuals, media and businesses of all sizes to participate and help spread the word.”

“We are excited to support such a cool movement, and to encourage people to connect with their communities,” said John Hallward, Chairman, GIV3. “We want people to feel great giving…in December and throughout the year!”
